Kenya and Tanzania are locked in a bitter dispute over a partial raising of the ivory trade ban.
Tanzania and Zambia would like a partial lift of the ban so they can sell off 113 tons of ivory that they have confiscated from illegal poaching - selling this ivory off to China and Japan could raise large sums of money for the two African nations.
Kenya are worried that if the ban is lifted, if only to sell the reserves of ivory that it could start a flood of poaching!
Reports of a massive ivory haul in Kenya where 500KG of ivory were recovered along with 65 arrests with people from Kenya, China and Tanzania.
“Kenya’s elephant population, like those of other African countries, continues to suffer from intensified poaching to supply increasing amounts of ivory to international markets,” said Julius Kipng’etich of the Kenya Wildlife Service.
“Recent significant seizures of many tons of raw ivory indicate that much of this ivory is destined for markets in the Far East.”
